We regret to announce the passing of Irwin Steinberg, the founder of TIA and its Executive Director for 15 years from 1990-2005, after a long hospitalization on April 9th .
Irwin I. Steinberg was born on October 15, 1926 in Brooklyn, New York. He graduated from the United States Military Academy (West Point, NY) in 1950 and obtained a Masters degree in business administration from New York University in 1961. He was a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army and served his country during the Korean War in the Signal Corps, for which he was awarded the Bronze Star.
After returning from Korea, he retired from the Army and embarked on a business career, as a corporate executive and private consultant in the defense and industrial goods sectors. He later joined the food industry, ultimately serving as President and Chief Executive Officer of Mission Tortillas. In 1990 he founded the Tortilla Industry Association and served as its executive director until retiring in 2005 during which time he was instrumental in tremendous growth of the Association as well as bringing about countless benefits and many great conferences that enhanced the success and prestige of its Members.
He is predeceased by both of his parents; his first wife, Mollie Steinberg; and his sister Alice Ostrowsky. He is survived by his wife, Mary Jabin Steinberg of Irving, Texas; his sister Dorothy Gottesman, of Boca Raton, FL; son Laurence Steinberg and his wife Wendy Steinberg of Philadelphia, PA; son Andrew Steinberg and his wife Roxann Steinberg of Chevy Chase, MD; two grandsons, Benjamin Steinberg of New York, NY and Malcolm Steinberg of Chevy Chase, MD; and one granddaughter, Madeline Steinberg, of Chevy Chase, Maryland.
A memorial service and interment have been scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 10, 2011 at the Old Cadet Chapel at the United States Military Academy. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you please consider a donation to the American Heart Association.
