NEW SURVEY REVEALS THAT TORTILLA
SALES
CONTINUE RECORD GROWTH
Increased Sales
A Result of Tortilla Consumption
Among Non-Hispanic Consumers and
Americans' Love of Mexican Food
DALLAS, TX
- The Tortilla Industry Association
(TIA) has announced the findings
of a market research study, the
State of the Tortilla Industry Survey:
2000, conducted by Aspex Research,
confirm the tortilla's standing
as the fastest growing segment of
the U.S. baking industry. In 2000,
U.S. sales at wholesale prices totaled
more than $4 billion, representing
a growth rate of 57% over the past
four years.
Tortillas are the second highest
selling product in the packaged
bread category, surpassing even
the highly popular bagel. The love
for Mexican food by U.S. consumers
is further illustrated by the fact
that Mexican food has become so
mainstream that salsa beats out
ketchup in sales and the margarita
is the number one cocktail in the
country.
Throughout recent years, Latin culture
has been an increasing influence
in America. The trend is even evident
in the food industry, as last year,
Americans consumed a total of 7
billion pounds of tortillas, which
is the equivalent to approximately
84 billion tortillas or almost one
tortilla per American each day.
